Llama Llama Hoppity Hop

Llama Llama is a young Llama and this board book was so cute. I notice when I read it to my 2 year old grandson, that it was very interactive. So when I went on vacation and had 5 little ones ages 2-8, we did the actions all the way through the book as a group and they loved it! When you can get the little ones to do the actions, but still have the older ones interested because it is fun and cute, then...THAT'S A GOOD BOOK!

It's a complicated read. It not only deals with humanity and history, but it also brings knowledge to the forefront, and it concludes with AI, the growth of artificial intelligence as we know it today and we either need to learn how to control it or work with this new technology that is growing in leaps and bounds-faster than thought possible. It is alive and well and living in our world today!

Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library
Author
Chris Grabenstein
Comments
This book backs up what I have believed for a long, long time! Kids are much smarter than we give them credit for being! A work of fiction, but you can see the little brain cells churning away in this book. If we look for this sometimes well-hidden intelligence in the kids we deal with every day, we will FIND it! Although this book is smart and well-written, it was also a lot of fun. It started ideas churning in my head about what we could do as a library to get our younger patrons to really think and enjoy using their brains! You get caught up in the world of Mr. Lemoncello very quickly, and he entertains and makes you think...this is not a bad thing! It's a whirlwind of ideas, plots, plans and dastardly deeds, with our imperfect, yet lovable hero working his way through adventure, gaming and FUN! Anyone would enjoy reading this book...

I loved this book! It is a gorgeous read for mature teens and adults. The story takes place in the 1950's-1960's but the book is written in a timeless way. Many adults in their mid-40's or older may have read this book before in their 7th grade classroom. My father read this book when his was my age and recommended this book to me. I loved it. This book has changed me emotionally and has made me more aware to other world issues.

Glitter and Glue
Author
Kelly Corrigan
Comments
This is a memoir that shows how the author, in 1992, not long out of college, learned about mothering as she took care of two young children who had recently lost their own mother to cancer. The experience caused the author to relate differently to her own mother, in part because she realized that she had absorbed so much from her. The trip was supposed to be Corrigan's big adventure, traveling around the globe, but she learned the most on her stopover in Australia, in her short stint as a nanny. The author, who became very protective of her charges, ages 5 and 8, wrote: “And it occurs to me that maybe the reason my mother was so exhausted all the time wasn’t because she was doing so much but because she was feeling so much.” Most mothers will identify with that statement. The book made me laugh and it made my cry; what more can we ask of a book?

My Name is Resolute
Author
Turner, Nancy
Comments
This book begins in the early 1770's and takes us up to the Revolutionary War. It helped me to understand more about why the colonists wanted their independence, partly due to harsh taxes, tariffs and restrictions demanded by the King of England. Resolute is a strong woman, taking her part in America's history and overcoming the harshness of her childhood. This book is hard to put down once you start reading it.

Ralph S. Mouse
Author
Beaverly Cleary
Comments
The main characters in this book are a boy named Ryan and a mouse named Ralph. Ryan lives at the hotel where Ralph lives under the grandfather clock. Ralph has a motorcycle that he drives, but his little cousins want to ride too. Ralph does not want to share so he asks Ryan to take him to school. Ryan does, but Ralph doesn't like the school. Ryan takes him back to the hotel. I liked the comedy and how it was written from a mouse's point of view.

The book was about a big school of Fish then a big tuna fish swallowed all of them besides Swimmy. He was all alone. He went on and saw some cool things that made him Excited. He then saw a group of red fish hiding in the rocks. He told them why are you afraid, they said because of the big fish. He came up with an idea to teach them all to swim together and he would be the eye and it would scare the big fish away.

Comments
This is book one of what I hope will be a continuing series. The characters are rich in experiences and emotions and seem real and not contrived. The story line moves right along, and just like in life, there are good and bad things that happen to our heroes and heroines. The books move back and forth in the timeline, and that keeps you hoping you have everyone straight, and the historical information may not be real, but it is realistic. Altogether, a good read! Title: The Valley Of Horses

Author: Jean M. Auel

Rating: 3 1/2 out of 5

This is a great historical fiction novel.  This is the second book in the series. Ayla has been forced from her home and has been living in the Valley of Horses. Here she has befriended a horse and a cave lion. Eventually she meets a man, one that looks like her, not the people of the clan that raised her.

Title: Critical Care

Author: Candace Calvert

Rating: 4 out of 5

Critical Care is christian fiction with more edge and less formula. Christian fiction usually has characters that are too good to be true. I felt the characters in Critical Care were more like real people. The hospital scenes were more medically accurate then what I'm used to. I didn't feel like I knew from the beginning what would end up happening. It was less predictable then the usual christian fiction book. The overall theme of the book was that even when we make plans, God's plan is the best plan for us.

Title: Don't Blink

Author: James Patterson

Rating: 5 out of 5

The book starts right off with action and surprise. The assassin is meeting with a "snitch"/ lawyer who lost a mobster's case and the assassin, in a public restaurant offs him and cuts out both eyes. (Eugh!) The book draws you in right away. Meanwhile, the main reporter character, (Nick Daniels) is in Africa and barely avoids death. He makes it back to U.S.A. only to be drawn into more danger. He was to interview Dwayne Robinson, pro ball player, who had a mysterious game loss and had hidden secrets he was going to tell Nick, but he died - "Suicide"...  Dwayne had talked to Nick and was going to meet with him again at the same restaurant where the assassin had mutilated the lawyer. Dwayne was going to come clean - but never got the chance. Pinero (mobster guy) kidnaps Nick and ends up telling him he was set up and wants Nick's help.(Curve ball). Derrick had uncovered the whole scheme when he hid a bug in his bossed office and was going to meet Nick with the news - He died, same as 1st guy with eyes..... Nick barely escapes death by car bomb. Derrick worked for Organized Crime Task Force. Any how-...... Very good.

Title: Disaster Status

Author: Candace Calvert

Rating: 4 out of 5

Disaster Status, Book 2, is a very good medical christian fiction series. The books could be read out of sequence, but there are a few mentions of characters from book 1 that are better if you read them in order. Good love story with many sub plots and one main theme of how a chemical disaster affects people. there's also christian themes of importance to forgive others. Christian characters are not perfect which makes them more true to life. Author is an RN and her medical details are correct. This is a good christian fiction series.

Title: Blow Fly

Author: Patricia Cornwell

Rating: 3 out of 5

This book was okay, not great. I enjoyed the murder mystery and suspense, but there was a lot of swearing, sex scenes, ect. I've read most of Patricia Cornwell's books in college and loved them. Perhaps my taste has changed. The story semed to bounce around and linger too long in many places. Overall I give Blow Fly a 3 out of 5.

A haunting novel spun slowly and with intricacy. Forbidden love builds to a fevered pitch in this tale and you'll ache for the two lovers to find a way to be together. Goolrick paints each character of this book like a true master. I look forward to reading more from this author. Add this one to your "Must Read" list.
